Established in 2009, Swakopmund Car Hire (SCH) has grown from a small family-run car rental business into an established and trusted vehicle rental company in Namibia.

The company was originally founded by Fanie van Wyk in 2009 under the name Gecko Car Rental. Shortly after the business began operating, the family discovered that another company called Gecko Car Hire was already operating in Windhoek. To avoid confusion and create a unique identity for the business, the decision was made in 2010 to change the name to Swakopmund Car Hire (SCH).

The new name reflected the vision of building a strong and recognisable car rental company based in Swakopmund. The goal was not simply to operate a rental business, but to establish a company that would become a respected name in the town where it began.

The business started to grow as more customers began requesting vehicles in Windhoek, at Hosea Kutako International Airport, and in other parts of Namibia. This growing demand created an opportunity for SCH to expand beyond its Swakopmund roots.

That opportunity eventually came when an established car rental business in Windhoek became available for purchase. SCH acquired Unlimited Car Hire, creating the foundation for its Windhoek operation. The SCH Windhoek branch was officially established in 2015, marking an important milestone in the company's history and its expansion from a Swakopmund-based rental company into a business capable of serving customers across Namibia.

Today, Swakopmund Car Hire offers a wide range of vehicles, including sedans, SUVs, 4x4s, and camping vehicles. The company has also become known for its self-drive safari and camping vehicle offerings, allowing local and international travellers to explore Namibia independently.

SCH provides a range of additional services, including airport transfers, roadside assistance, GPS navigation systems, and comprehensive insurance options. With more than 15 years of experience, the company has developed a strong understanding of the needs of both local and international customers travelling through Namibia.

But the real strength of SCH is its people.

The employees of Swakopmund Car Hire are a fundamental part of what has made the business successful. They are not simply employees — they are people who genuinely care about the company, its customers, and what SCH represents. Their passion, dedication, hard work, and willingness to go the extra mile have played a major role in building the business into what it is today.

Every member of the SCH team contributes to the company's success. From preparing and maintaining vehicles to assisting customers, handling bookings, managing operations, and ensuring that every customer has a positive experience, the commitment of the SCH team is what keeps the business moving forward.

From its beginnings as Gecko Car Rental in 2009, through the transition to Swakopmund Car Hire in 2010, and later expansion into Windhoek through the acquisition of Unlimited Car Hire and the establishment of the Windhoek branch in 2015, SCH has continued to grow while remaining a family-driven business.

Today, Swakopmund Car Hire has reached a point where it can be described as an established, stable, and reliable car rental company in Namibia. More than 15 years of experience, countless customers, thousands of journeys, and many changes within the Namibian tourism industry have shaped the company into what it is today.

Only time can truly prove what Swakopmund Car Hire will become.

What started with one family, one idea, and a small car rental business in Swakopmund has grown into a trusted name in Namibia's car rental industry — a company built on experience, perseverance, reliability, passion, its people, and a vision to keep growing.
