Established in 2009, Swakopmund Car Hire (SCH) has grown from a small family-run car rental business into an established and trusted vehicle rental company in Namibia.

The company was originally founded by Fanie van Wyk in 2009 under the name Gecko Car Rental. Shortly after the business started operating, the family discovered that there was another company called Gecko Car Hire already operating in Windhoek. To avoid confusion and create a unique identity for the business, Wessel van Wyk, son of founder Fanie van Wyk, started working at the company in 2010.

When Wessel joined the business, he chose the name Swakopmund Car Hire (SCH) because his vision was to build and establish a strong car rental company based in Swakopmund. His goal was not simply to run a rental business, but to grow SCH into a recognised and respected name in the town where the company started.

The business began to grow as more clients started requesting vehicles in Windhoek, at Hosea Kutako International Airport, and in other parts of Namibia. This growing demand created an opportunity for SCH to expand beyond Swakopmund.

The opportunity eventually came when an established car rental business in Windhoek became available for purchase. SCH acquired Unlimited Car Hire, creating the foundation for the company's Windhoek operation. The SCH Windhoek branch was officially established in 2015, marking an important milestone in the company's history and its expansion from a Swakopmund-based rental company into a business capable of serving customers across Namibia.

Today, Swakopmund Car Hire (SCH) offers a wide range of vehicles, including sedans, SUVs, 4x4s, and camping vehicles. The company also became known for its self-drive safari and camping vehicle offerings, allowing local and international travellers to explore Namibia independently.

SCH provides a range of additional services, including airport transfers, roadside assistance, GPS navigation systems, and comprehensive insurance options. With more than 15 years of experience, the company has developed a strong understanding of the needs of both local and international customers travelling through Namibia.

From its beginnings as Gecko Car Rental in 2009, to Wessel joining the business and choosing the name Swakopmund Car Hire in 2010, and later expanding into Windhoek through the acquisition of Unlimited Car Hire and the establishment of the Windhoek branch in 2015, SCH has continued to grow while remaining a family-driven business.

Today, Swakopmund Car Hire has reached a point where it can be described as an established, stable, and reliable car rental company in Namibia. More than 15 years of experience, countless customers, thousands of journeys, and many changes in the Namibian tourism industry have shaped the company into what it is today.
